The Kashi Vishwanath temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is said to have initially been built by Sage Parshuram and which was later renovated by Maharani Khaneti, wife of Sudarshan Shah in 1857. The present temple was built over the pre-existing ancient altar, in the year 1857 A.D. by the queen of Tehri Smt. Khaneti Devi, w/o king Shri Sudershan Shah with traditional Himalayan temple architecture.
Legend is Lord Shiva considers this as his aboard from the second part of the Kaliyuga. Belief is that when Kashi or Varanasi will be submerged under water and Lord Kashi Vishwanath will be shifted to this temple in Uttarkashi.
Nachiketa Tal is a beautiful lake, located at a distance of 32 km from Uttarkashi. The lake is surrounded by oak, pine and rhododendron, which further enhance the beauty of the place. It is believed that the lake was created by Nachiketa, son of sage Uddalak.

Shakti Temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati, is situared just opposite to the Vishwanath temple. The main attraction here is a huge and heavy trishul (trident) - 6 meters in height and 90 cms at the bottom which was thrown at the devils by Goddess Durga.
Mother Shakti, is found represented here as a giant trishul or trident, which is estimated to be over 1500 years old and is regarded as one of the oldest relics of Uttarakhand. It has Tibetan inscriptions on it indicating extensive Indo-Tibetan culture exchanges during ancient times. The details of Naga Dynasty are found inscribed on the metal trident which is over 26 feet high, kept in front of the main Shiva temple.
